London Ambulance Service leader named in HSJ’s most influential list

The Chief Financial Officer of London Ambulance Service has been recognised for his impact on healthcare, as he’s named one of the 50 most influential Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in health.

Rakesh Patel appears alongside an esteemed list of leaders including Lord Ara Darzi and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan.

The Health Service Journal (HSJ) compiles the annual list to celebrate people who have shaped healthcare through innovation and influence.

From trainee to CFO

Rakesh said: “This is a real honour but also a complete surprise. The work we do in finance tends to be behind the scenes so I’m not used to being in the spotlight.

“I’m very proud and also grateful for the opportunities I have had along the way – taking me from a trainee to Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief Executive of London Ambulance Service.

“I’m also grateful to the incredible colleagues I have worked with in every job I’ve had. The strength of any service lies in its people and I have been part of some outstanding teams.”

Rakesh began his NHS career over 35 years ago at University College Hospital. A chemistry graduate, he took a trainee accountant role simply because it was the only offer he received.

Investing in better care for patients

Starting in an entry-level Band 3 role, he worked his way up the NHS career ladder while studying for his professional qualifications.

He joined London Ambulance Service in December 2021 and from the start has ensured financial decision-making has directly benefited patient care.

In his time the Service has recruited more staff than ever before and invested heavily in education, training and greener, modern vehicles.

Rakesh said: “People don’t always associate NHS finance with saving lives – but they should. When we invest in buildings, vehicles, training, or new roles, we’re investing in better care for patients and better working lives for our people.

“You can do great things with money, if you use it wisely – and if you actually understand what people on the ground need.”

Lives are saved in the back of an ambulance

Rakesh has successfully worked with local commissioners who fund the Service to invest in major projects and a new fleet of cleaner greener vehicles.

The HSJ particularly noted his work navigating complex challenges, including the impact of the Ultra Low Emission Zone on emergency service vehicles.

He said: “I’ve had to persuade people that lives are saved in the back of an ambulance – these are not just a means of transport. This is where our people care for their patients and we need to invest in them.”

Lifelong Spurs fan

Rakesh’s commitment to the NHS runs in the family – with his son now working in a clinical role.

Outside of work, Rakesh loves to watch football and is a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan.

He added: “Supporting Spurs has taught me patience and resilience – excellent preparation for a career in NHS finance!”
