The Service celebrates seventy years of the NHS – and looks to the future

The NHS was established 70 years ago on 5 July 2018. London Ambulance Service became an NHS Trust in April 1996, having been established to our current formation in 1965 with the merger of nine existing services.

Here we share some stories of people who have worked in our team in the decades since 1948 and some historic photographs of vehicles, stations and uniforms throughout the years.

Medics honoured for saving girl who was shot

Three London Ambulance Service medics have been honoured at a glittering award ceremony celebrating NHS Heroes. Paramedics James Lafferty and Caroline Appleby and emergency ambulance crew Sherridan Best won the Emergency Lifesavers Award for saving the life of Britain’s youngest gunshot victim.

Ambulance crews treating more patients for falls in bad weather

Ambulance calls to people who have slipped, tripped or fallen are up over 10 per cent during the cold spell.

As temperatures have plummeted this week, London Ambulance Service has seen a 13 per cent* increase in calls relating to slips, trips and falls yesterday (27 February) compared to the week before. And Monday (26 February) saw an 11 per cent** increase from the previous week.
