Ambulance careers

Information on frontline ambulance roles at London Ambulance Service, covering what it’s like working for us, what qualifications you need and how to apply.

Our emergency ambulance crews include paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). They respond to a wide variety of calls, primarily serious or life-threatening emergencies.

We have also introduced the role of Assistant Ambulance Practitioner (AAP) as part of our career pathway. No previous medical experience is required, as full training is provided. You can begin in our Non-Emergency Transport Service (NETS), progress to an AAP role, and potentially move into other clinical positions, including becoming a paramedic.

The ambulance career pathway

1) Non-Emergency Transport Service (NETS)

Non-Apprenticeship
10-12 weeks of on and off the job training

2) Assistant Ambulance Practitioner (AAP)

Apprenticeship
Qualification gained: Level 3 Ambulance Support Worker Standard
13 months of training

3) Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Apprenticeship
Qualification gained: Level 4 Associate Ambulance Practitioner Standard
15 months of training

4) Paramedic apprenticeship programme

Apprenticeship
Qualification gained: Paramedic Degree, or Direct Graduate entry
24 months of training
