Paramedic science degrees

Information on paramedic careers at London Ambulance Service, and doing a paramedic science degree through one of our partner agencies.

Being a paramedic in London is a challenge like no other – we have got more than nine million Londoners and tourists to care for.  

We are the busiest ambulance service in the UK and our crews respond to around six thousand 999 calls every day. If you’re considering a career as a paramedic, there is no better place to be.  

To qualify as a paramedic, you can do a paramedic science degree with one of our university partners.

  • University of West London, MSc Paramedic Science 

    This two-year pre-registration, HCPC validated master’s degree starts in January. It has been designed for those with either a healthcare undergraduate degree or another degree alongside experience in a healthcare setting, who wish to become a paramedic in two years.   

    You will gain the knowledge, skills and clinical expertise to deliver safe and effective care outside of hospital.  

    On completion you will be eligible to register with the HCPC as a paramedic.

  • We do not offer funding directly, but you may be eligible for support through your local education authority.  

    As a student paramedic, you may also be eligible to apply for the NHS Learning Support Fund including a training grant of £5000 and additional financial support.

  • Apply directly to the university of your choice. Entry requirements are:  

    • BSc degree: five GCSEs at grade 5 or above (including maths, English and a science) plus 360 CATS points, equivalent to three A-levels  
    • MSc degree: an undergraduate degree in a healthcare profession or biological sciences, with patient care experience  
    • Mature students with equivalent qualifications and experience will be considered.  
    • To secure a place on a course, you will need to a full manual UK driving licence. Driving requirements may vary slightly by course. 

    To join us on completion of your degree, as well as your full manual UK driving licence, you will need a minimum of a year’s driving experience, no more than three points and a provisional C1 on your licence.

    To join us on completion of your degree, you will also need a minimum of one year’s driving experience, no more than three penalty points, and a provisional C1 entitlement on your licence, in addition to holding a full manual UK driving licence.
