Assistant Ambulance Practitioners (AAPs) work on the frontline alongside registered paramedics and other qualified clinicians, supporting patients experiencing illness, injury and medical emergencies.
This role is delivered through an apprenticeship pathway, and, on successful completion, you will achieve a Level 3 Diploma in Ambulance Emergency and Urgent Care Support.

This is an entry route into becoming a paramedic without the need to attend university full time.
After successfully completing AAP training, you will be eligible to apply for the Trainee Emergency Medical Technician (TEMT) role and continue that apprenticeship programme.
Once you have successfully completed all elements of the TEMT programme, you will qualify as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
You will then be eligible to apply for the paramedic degree apprenticeship, a two-year programme that leads to qualification as a Newly Qualified Paramedic (NQP).
London Ambulance Service funds all apprenticeship training for this pathway.
No previous medical experience is needed. However, you must hold the required English and maths qualifications to apply and enrol on the apprenticeship pathway.

Overseas qualifications will also be accepted where there is clear evidence from UK ENIC (formerly NARIC) that they are equivalent in level and grade to the minimum UK requirements. Further guidance is available on the UK ENIC website.

All applicants must be aged 18 or over and hold the required qualifications listed above. No previous healthcare experience is required.
Applicants must also hold a current Category B driving licence valid in the UK, with no more than three penalty points, as well as a C1 provisional entitlement or full C1 licence at the time of application. A driving licence summary check will be requested during the pre-screening stage to confirm this entitlement.

The C1 provisional licence application process can take up to three weeks, so it is important to start as early as possible. It may take longer if any health or personal details need to be checked.
There is no application fee. You will need to complete the DVLA D2 and D4 forms.

Funding is available for the C1 theory tests (multiple choice and hazard perception) and the C1 practical driving test, through the C1 incentive agreement for successful candidates.
Candidates will be responsible for any re-test fees for either the theory or practical test if they are unsuccessful on their first attempt.
This support is only available when training is completed through our approved driving school, Wallace. We are unable to reimburse costs if tests are booked privately.
