London Ambulance Chief Finance Officer recognised among UK’s most influential healthcare leaders

The Chief Finance Officer at London Ambulance Service has been named in the HSJ’s prestigious list of the most influential Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in healthcare, recognising his contribution to improving health services for Londoners.

This year, Rakesh Patel joins an esteemed list that includes the Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, and former health minister and peer Lord Ara Darzi.

The annual HSJ list celebrates individuals whose leadership, innovation and influence are helping to shape the future of healthcare across the UK.

Since joining the Service in December 2021, Rakesh has played a key role in ensuring financial decisions directly improve patient care, while helping the Service invest in its workforce, education programmes and modernising its fleet with greener vehicles.

He has also worked closely with local commissioners to improve services across the capital and navigating the impact of the Ultra Low Emission Zone on emergency service vehicles.

The recognition marks a remarkable 36-year career journey through the NHS.

Rakesh studied for his qualifications while working as a trainee accountant at University College Hospital. He then climbed the career ladder in various financial management roles in the NHS, including Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, West Middlesex University Hospital and Barnet, Enfield and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust.

He also led the financial recovery at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals.

In December 2021, he became Chief Financial Officer and Deputy Chief Executive at the UK’s busiest ambulance service.

Rakesh Patel said:

“It’s an honour to be recognised alongside such inspiring leaders who are helping to drive innovation and improve health outcomes across the country.

“I’m incredibly proud of the journey my NHS career has taken me on.

“I’m also proud to help ensure taxpayers’ money is invested responsibly so that Londoners receive the best possible care from us.

“At a time when demand for healthcare services continues to grow, it is essential that every pound we spend delivers real benefits for patients – whether that’s investing in cutting-edge AI tools, developing our workforce or expanding our greener fleet.”

Under Rakesh’s leadership, London Ambulance Service has continued to strengthen investment in its people, services and infrastructure so that the Service can meet the evolving needs of London’s growing population.
