Quality Improvement

Information on what Quality Improvement is and how we use it to empower our people to make a difference for patients in London.

What is Quality Improvement?

Quality Improvement (QI) is a structured, evidence-based approach to improving patient outcomes, experiences and efficiency by testing changes in local settings.

QI focuses on understanding how systems currently work, reducing unwarranted variation and using data to identify what improvement is needed. It empowers staff at all levels to identify opportunities, test ideas and embed sustainable change that benefits patients, staff and the wider Trust.

Our approach to Quality Improvement

At London Ambulance Service, we use proven improvement methodologies to support change. Our approach is practical, inclusive and data-driven, enabling teams to improve the services they deliver every day.

Working alongside services to understand their challenges, set clear aims, identify meaningful measures, generate ideas for change and build capability so that improvement becomes part of everyday practice rather than a one-off activity.

In 2025, London Ambulance Service was proud to be an HSJ Award winner for Staff Wellbeing, reflecting our commitment to improving the experience and wellbeing of our workforce through evidence‑based improvement.
