Paramedics urge Londoners to stay safe as ambulance service prepares for surge in 999 calls

London Ambulance Service is calling on Londoners to only call 999 in a life-threatening emergency as the Service prepares for a potential rise in calls which could accompany the hottest weekend of the year so far.
Last Friday high pollen levels and warm temperatures meant LAS received more than 7,000 calls compared with 5,500 on a typically busy day. This weekend is forecast to be even hotter.
The Service has activated its plans to ensure the best possible care for patients, particularly during times of high demand. This includes maximising other forms of care such as community response cars, having more clinicians working to assess patients over the phone, and working with hospitals to ensure patients are handed over more quickly.
Stuart Crichton, Director of 999 Operations at London Ambulance Service, said:
“We have been very busy this week and expect to be even busier this weekend as temperatures climb even further. We would will like to remind Londoners to only call 999 in a life-threatening emergency.
“On some days over the last week, we have taken over 7,000 calls. This is nearly an additional thousand 999 calls a day compared to the same period last month.
“We want people to enjoy the weather but please take steps to look after yourselves and others around you.
“Older people, the very young and people with pre-existing conditions are more at risk in hot weather so please look out for neighbours, family or friends who may need some help and make sure they are able to keep cool during the heat.
“Sometimes people start to feel ill a few days after the hot weather so please continue to look after yourself and others.
“Please be aware of the dangers of spending too long in the sun and the health risks of hot weather. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight – especially between 11am and 3pm when the sun’s UV rays are at their strongest. Try to stick to shade and wear sun cream.
“In warmer weather it’s also important to drink plenty of water. If you’re heading out, take a bottle of water with you.
“And please be sensible if you’re drinking alcohol – make sure you have a meal and try to also have soft drinks.”
Our teams are always here to help if you need us, but we would ask that people follow advice, use our service wisely and contact your GP, pharmacy or NHS 111 where possible.
During periods of hot weather, we know our services will be busier than usual, and so take action to reduce any adverse impact, such as extra ambulance crews out on the road and extra call handlers in our control rooms.
