“Great patient care starts with our people” – London Ambulance Service appoints new director

London Ambulance Service has appointed Carl Kneeshaw as its new Chief People Officer.

Carl, who joined this week, says his ambition is to make the Service an employer of choice by creating a culture where everyone feels supported and able to do their best work.

He said: “London Ambulance Service is unlike anywhere else. I didn’t join just because it’s the biggest and busiest. I joined because I believe it can be the best.

“Great patient care starts with our people. I want colleagues to recommend us as a place to work and Londoners to recommend us as a place to receive care.”

A new challenge

Carl was previously Director of People at Welsh Ambulance Services and has held senior leadership roles across the NHS, HM Prison Service, the Ministry of Justice and the Department for Work and Pensions.

He was drawn to London by its unique challenges and opportunities.

During his first few months, Carl plans to spend time meeting and listening to colleagues, partners and stakeholders to understand what matters most to them.

Listening first

He said: “It’s not just about processes and policies. It’s about people. Everyone needs to feel safe, valued and listened to.

“I want to build on the strong foundations already here and ensure everyone feels able to be themselves at work and know they’ll be treated with respect.”

“If we get the basics right, our people can focus on delivering exceptional care.”

Building the right culture

One of his priorities will be supporting managers to build positive team cultures and tackle issues compassionately and confidently when they arise.

He also wants to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy, improve staff wellbeing and continue creating an environment where people feel supported to build long-term careers at London Ambulance Service.

Off duty

Away from work, Carl swaps managing people for managing one dog, two horses and nine ducks at his home in the countryside. He doesn’t disclose which are the most demanding.
