Man jailed for hitting a paramedic in the face with a guitar

A man, who hit a paramedic in the face using a guitar as a weapon, has been sent to prison for 56 days.

Adrian Naylor, aged 35 from Cheshire, was found guilty of assault following a trial at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on 30 October.

The incident happened in March this year when Brent Paramedic Shachar Barak was taking a patient to University College Hospital.

On arrival at the hospital Naylor, who was not connected to the patient Shachar was treating, became aggressive after Shachar politely asked him to move out of the way as he and his crewmate tried to book the patient into the hospital.

Naylor then attacked Shachar with a guitar hitting him in the face and causing a nosebleed and a deep cut.

Hospital security removed Naylor from the accident and emergency department immediately and he was later arrested by police.

Shachar said: “This was an extremely upsetting experience and I am pleased that justice has been done.

“It came as a complete shock to be so violently attacked especially when I did nothing other than to ask him to move out of the way so I could get through to take my patient into the hospital.

“Thankfully incidents like this are rare but I hope this custodial sentence will act as a deterrent to anyone else who thinks it is acceptable or that they will get away with assaulting a medic.”

Ambulance Operations Manager, Peter Rhodes, said: “This was a completely unprovoked and vicious attack and I am pleased that Naylor has been sent to prison.

“Thankfully Shachar made a quick recovery but this could have been much worse.

“I hope this sends a clear message that attacks on our staff will not be tolerated and where possible we will always pursue prosecution.”
