To be attributed to a London Ambulance Service spokesperson:

“We were called at 4.25pm today to reports of a fire on Havil Street in Camberwell.

“We sent 16 ambulance crews, eight officers, two single responders in cars, a doctor and our hazardous area response team to the scene. The first of our staff arrived within four minutes.

“A total of 18 patients, including 11 children, have been treated and taken to hospital. Most of these are understood to have been suffering from smoke inhalation, while three who were in a serious condition were sadly pronounced dead in hospital.
