The year in pictures: 2011

This year has been another very busy one for the London Ambulance Service; we've cared for patients, engaged with the public and been involved in some great charity events.

Here are some photos taken over the last 12 months showing just some of things we did in 2011.

We held our first 'An evening with us' public event where people could find out more about our organisation and the work we do.

February

Croydon Junior Citizens schemeWe actively support the junior citizen scheme and help to educate Year Six pupils (10-11 year olds) in highlighting hazardous situations they may face in their everyday lives.

March

Long serving members of staffA few times each year we recognise the dedication of staff who are either retiring or who are 'long servers'.

April

Staff at the Royal WeddingAs hundreds of thousands of well wishers flocked to central London for the Royal Wedding, staff were making sure patients continued to get the treatment they needed.

In this photo, staff take a short break from caring for the crowds to join the celebrations as the newlyweds pass.

Jim McCluskey meets his lifesaversAmbulance Officer Jim McCluskey was saved by quick-thinking lifeguards and ambulance colleagues when he suffered a cardiac arrest while swimming.

A member of staff getting her blood pressure checkedIt's not just our patients' health we care about, but our staff's too.

Our staff go to many fairs and festivals in the capital to educate the public on how the ambulance service works and what they can do in an emergency.

August

An ambulance in MongoliaVolunteers arrived in Mongolia after driving six decommissioned LDV London ambulances from Horseguards Parade to donate to local health providers.

September

Abdul Malek El Hamdi cared for by staffThe Service was asked by the Department of Health to coordinate the process of bringing seriously-injured Libyan patients to the UK for treatment.

BBC See Hear filmingOur motorcycle response unit and our work with the deaf community was featured on BBC See Hear.

Assistant Chief Ambulance Officer John Pooley interviewed live on BBCPublic sector industrial action over Government pension plans thrust the Service into the media spotlight as our response to 999 demand was seriously affected.
