London Ambulance Service is limbering up for
another Notting Hill Carnival, but instead of putting the finishing
touches to their costumes, medics are preparing to duck and bob
through the excitement to get to people in need
With crowds at Europe’s largest street
festival on Sunday 24 August and Monday 25 August expected to be
almost a million, the Service will partner up with St John
Ambulance (SJA) to provide teams of three to easily navigate the
narrow streets to get to patients in need.
Each team, made up of a paramedic, an
emergency medical technician and a SJA volunteer, will work on foot
with full medical equipment including a defibrillator, oxygen and a
carry sheet which can be used as a stretcher.
These teams will work with ten treatment
centres along the parade route, where the majority of patients will

“This is always a great event and we hope that everyone who attends
has a safe and enjoyable time.
“Visitors can help themselves by making sure
they bring any medication they may need, drink alcohol responsibly
and drink plenty of water. Every year we treat lots of people for
cuts and injuries to their feet so it is important people wear
sensible shoes that will protect their feet from any broken glass
along the route.
“We plan well in advance for the carnival with
St John Ambulance and the emergency services, and ensure that extra
staff are available throughout the weekend.
“Our aim is to treat as many people who need
first aid at one of the treatment centres run by St John Ambulance,
so they don’t have to go to hospital unless they really need
