London Ambulance Service recruits from Down Under this Australia Day

While many will be celebrating down under, the UK’s busiest ambulance service is preparing to return to Australia to recruit over 150 paramedics to work in London.

The recruitment events, planned for April 2016, follow several successAusDay2016ful visits and will showcase some of the incredible things that London has to offer to international paramedics.

London Ambulance’s existing Australian medics are also encouraging others to join them in the Capital.

Paramedic Mitchell Hand, who moved to London following a recruitment event in Sydney, said: “Australia Day is such a big holiday back home, and despite being away, Aussies in London certainly join in the celebrations. Day to day, London is a great city to live and work – there’s always something to do, from visiting some of the world’s most iconic sights to relaxing in the Royal Parks across the city.”

Around 280 paramedics from Australia have already joined the Service since recruitment began overseas in 2014, and a further 270 will begin their training between January – March of this year.

The latest plans to return are just one of the many ways that London Ambulance Service is hoping to combat the national shortage of paramedics in the UK.

The Service has also implemented a number of new initiatives to develop paramedics from the UK, including a new education academy which gives existing ambulance crew the opportunity to progress and partnerships with Universities to ensure roles for graduate paramedics.

Leading on international recruitment, Assistant Director of Operations Natasha Wills said: “Our last recruitment events in Melbourne and Sydney were so successful that we’re hoping to attract even more paramedics to join us in London this time.

“Working in London is an experience like no other. As part of the busiest ambulance service in the country, they’ll be dealing with everything from cardiac arrests and road traffic collisions. They will also have the opportunity to work at major events like Notting Hill Carnival and London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

 “There are so many different opportunities with London Ambulance that you can’t get anywhere else, such as working on a motorbike, cycle or car or for the hazardous area response team. I’d encourage any Australian to come and make the most of their career in London as a recognised paramedic – you won’t regret it.”
