Why become a governor and what to expect

Governors of an NHS foundation trust have a vitally important role, and we are looking for a range of individuals who will bring their different skills and experience to our Council of Governors. The role is voluntary and one that requires time and commitment.

We hope the following questions and answers provide you with enough information if you are thinking about becoming a governor.

Why should I become a governor of the London Ambulance Service?

  • To help shape the future development of emergency health services for London.
  • To become more informed about us and possible future changes to our Service.
  • To use your personal and / or professional experiences and the experiences of people you represent to help make positive changes.
  • To meet other like-minded people who want to make a difference.

Find out why other governors have got involved.

Will I be personally liable as a governor?

No, we have collective and individual indemnity in place. It is our Board of Directors which is accountable for ensuring that we conduct our business in line with legislation and the terms of authorisation, and for addressing all risks. Governors are bound by the Trust Constitution and the incorporated standing orders. Governors as individuals would not be in a position to make personal decisions. All decisions must be agreed as a Council.
