How we planned for the Games

Our role during the Games

We supported London’s 2012 Games Bid prior to its award, then planned and delivered high quality emergency medical services to the Games and the rest of London in summer of 2012. 

We also contributed to the safety and security of the 2012 Games operating within a multi-agency environment both before and during Games-time.

What we did

We started our planning in 2007 – a lesson we learned from other cities who have hosted the Games is that you can never start planning early enough.

  • We spoke to those who have held Games before to see what could be learned.
  • We were involved in consultation on aspects of design for the Olympic Park venues and village, transport plans and security.
  • We appointed staff to work at the event venues including some from other NHS ambulance services.
  • We delivered a specific training programme for staff working during the Games.
  • We took part in multi-agency exercises, including exercise Forward Defensive, to ensure we were prepared for every eventuality.
  • We coordinated the national ambulance service response to the 2012 Games, as not all events were held in the capital.
  • We were involved in a full programme of test events to test the venues and how everyone worked together.
  • We bought, checked and equipped 66 new vehicles and stocked up on medical supplies ahead of the Games.
  • We planned and developed the Olympic Deployment Centre, which was used as a base for staff working during the Games.

We joined representatives from the emergency services, NHS London and the Greater London Authority at a Health and Public Services Committee meeting in March 2012 to provide reassurance that plans were in place to maintain a normal service across London during the Games.

Issues covered included how we would manage increased demand during Games time, the anticipated impact on response times, the testing that had taken place, use of the Olympic Route Network and legacy from the Games.
